Allen Blacklock collection, 1870-1975 1890-1970.

MS 2002-98 consists of the Allen Blacklock collection, covering the years 1870-1975 (bulk of material is from 1890-1970). The majority of this collection consists of photographs. It also contains some printed sources, such as railroad timetables. The subject of the photographs: Ann Arbor Railroad and railroad car ferries docking at Elberta, Michigan; train wrecks in the vicinity; people of Elberta; and scenes of Elberta. The photographs in the collection (approx. 400 items) came from many sources including Blacklock's own personal collection. The oversized photographs of the American House Hotel and lumbering operations were on display for many years in the dining room of the American House Hotel in Elberta. The oversized prints were the property of Margaret McManus who owned and operated the hotel until it closed in 1917. Other photographs in the collection can be traced to the Claude T. Stoner Collection, which is housed at the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan. Stoner and Blacklock were both employees of the Ann Arbor Railroad; they corresponded frequently and exchanged photographs. Other photographs in the collection are believed to have been commissioned by the management of the Ann Arbor Railroad. After the death of Blacklock, the collection came into the possession of Deryl D. Holmes. He scanned each individual print, researched the collection, cataloged the prints and wrote descriptions in an index. A few photographs come from the private collection of Holmes. The compact discs of scanned prints can be found in box 1.
